After two years in the making, Innerflections is the culmination of our widespread musical explorations as a collective. Ranging from deep grooves to club worthy heavy hitters, from obsessive love admissions to dark experimental textures, this 5-track EP is an eclectic journey through our sonic realm consisting of “Landing On Your Lips”, “Memories On A Theme”, “Subjected”, “A Curse” (with bostog) and “Spindoctor”.
Adding up to our previous releases OB-1 and Pink Moon, Innerflections is the final piece in a trilogy marked by the connection between all cover artworks, which allowed us to shape our collective’s musical and graphical identity, showing our rich influences and broad range in cross-disciplinarity.
Rotterdam-based cross disciplinary art collective Octagon Blues, is the creative output of three interdisciplinary artists. Jeroen Janssen, Rodrigo Ribeiro and Samuel van der Veer come from Maastricht (NL), Porto (PT) and Rotterdam (NL) respectively, and met in 2017 during their Bachelor of Dance at Codarts University of the Arts. There, they frequently collaborated on creating and performing contemporary dance, but it wasn’t until 2019 that they found out about their shared ambitions of becoming interdisciplinary artists. Not long after, the decision to form a collective was made, and they have been working and curating in the fields of dance, electronic music, graphic art and filmmaking ever since.
With the release of their 4-track EP in 2020, titled OB-1, the collective slowly started appealing to the ears and bodies of the dance community highly present in Rotterdam. This inspired the collective to organise events centered around improvisation, for both professional and non-professional dancers, to come together and move their bodies to the sound of their musical curation.
In May 2021, Octagon Blues released their single Pink Moon, driven by the Super Pink Moon that rose one month earlier on a cloudy night in April. They expanded their electronic sonic realm in analog directions, with the recording happening at WORM Studio Rotterdam, in collaboration with Tommy van Leuken (Avvnt MM), having experimented with an Alpha Juno 2, a Fender Rhodes, among other analog gear on a 17-hour long session. Their second single Spindoctor was released a year later, in anticipation of their upcoming second EP.
With three releases under their belt, OB continued pushing their musical ideas forward with various live sets at Eendracht Festival Rotterdam, New Tears Festival and MOMO Fabrique, where they also presented METi, a dance piece choreographed and scored by one of the members.
Alongside their individual (freelance) careers as professional dancers, producers/composers and DJs, the collective is now ready to present to the world their brand new EP Innerflections to be released on September 4th, 2023. By drawing from their diverse experiences across various art forms, Octagon Blues continues to explore their unique sonic and artistic signature.
